Chapter Twelve

After our adventures in survival, it felt good to be back at school, just attending classes and doing homework. “Just” being the operative word since my schedule this semester was beyond taxing of my poor half-human brain. Still, I loved it. It felt like a good stretch for the mind to learn things that were not only new but that others on this planet had no idea were even possible to learn. Or existed. I saw the guys in class, and we often ate together or studied in the library, and it was a pretty good life. Xan still only came to talk to me when I was by myself, and I had a feeling he held the belief that he could lure me away from the others, but that would never happen.

I dreamed every night about sleeping in Jhoren and Lumino’s arms and about that kiss from Xan. I’d never experienced anything quite like it. It was possessive and exciting and I wanted another one soon.

On Friday afternoon, Jhoren came and found me sitting on a bench outside enjoying the cooling evening air. The desert warmed up pretty well most days but just like the night under the overhang, it got chilly after sunset. “Zoe, I’d like to take you on a date.”

“What?” I seemed to say that a lot lately. “I mean yes, when?”

“Now?” He flashed me a grin. “Dinner and then see what happens?”

“But we eat dinner together all the time. What makes this a date?” I’m not sure what I expected him to suggest since we were pretty isolated here. There was a town not too far away of course.

“I have a special place in mind. One of my friends’ dads keeps a small home about ten miles from here, and he said we can use it tonight if we want. I’ll cook for you?”

Okay, so if we were going to a house for the evening, what did that mean? Did he expect me to stay over? Or was it just dinner and talking or…”

“Zoe, stop overthinking.” He stroked a strand of hair off my cheek. “Nothing will happen that you don’t want to happen.”

And that answered my question. We were going to this house where he would prepare a romantic meal and then...if I was willing… “I didn’t know you could cook,” I blurted out.

He barked a laugh. “I’m trying to get you alone in a house for the night and my chef skills are what’s catching your attention? I’m really slipping.”

“No.” I rested a palm on his cheek. “That’s not what caught my attention. But I can’t go right now.”

“Okay.” His expression fell so fast, it was almost comical. “I understand.”

“I hope so. A girl needs a little time to get ready for a big date. Pick me up in two hours.”
